Méconnu en occident, Sadaharu Horio est pourtant considéré comme l’un des plus grands artistes expérimentaux japonais. Né à Kobe en 1939, pionnier de l’art performatif, il devient le plus jeune membre du groupe Gutaï en 1966, quand ce célèbre mouvement d’avant-garde fondé en 1954 touche à sa fin. Pour Horio, l’art englobe la vie et trouve sa source dans chaque moment vécu. L’artiste fait de la pratique artistique un rituel quotidien où il saisit l’instant et le vole au temps. Il déroulera son œuvre entre installations, performances, créations peintes ou en volume à base de matériaux récupérés, s’exprimant par des modalités extrêmement diverses. Datée de 1977 et inédite sur le marché, cette œuvre de papier, plié, superposé, découpé, suspendu dans l’espace, est d’une délicatesse et d’une poésie infinie. Le geste artistique, mêlant la spontanéité créative et la rigueur du mouvement, métamorphose un matériau commun en œuvre, dans une alchimie minimaliste qui donne à une feuille de papier la troisième dimension, l’inspiration du souffle et l’animation de la matière.

Unknown in the West, Sadaharu Horio is considered one of the greatest Japanese experimental artists. Born in Kobe in 1939, a pioneer of performance art, he became the youngest member of the Gutaï group in 1966, when the famous Avant-Garde movement founded in 1954 was coming to an end. For Horio, art embraces life and finds its source in every moment lived. The artist made artistic practice a daily ritual where he grabs the moment and steals it from time. He would carry out his work between installations, performances, painted creations or volume based on scrap materials, expressing himself in extremely diverse ways. Dated 1977 and never before on the market, this work on paper, folded, superimposed, cut out, suspended in space, is of infinite delicacy and poetry. The artistic gesture, combining creative spontaneity and the rigour of movement, metamorphoses a common material into a piece of art, in a minimalist alchemy that gives a sheet of paper the third dimension, the inspiration of the breath and the animation of the material.
